Coral Gables Police understand that Information analysis is the brain behind public safety and seek to join IBM in attaining that goal

The Coral Gables Police Department is closely studying IBM's created white paper :

Public Safety:  "from sense and respond" to "predict and react."

The Coral Gables Police Department is seeking to implement a policing startegy very similiar to the document published by IBM. The Smarter Cities Challenge Grant offered by IBM is an ideal funding oppurtunity for the Coral Gables Police Department to initiate a model policing program like the methodology that IBM supports.

"It seems that IBM really has a firm grasp of the exact direction we as a police department would like to migrate to. Predictive Analysis, data dimensions, and information exploration are all areas that we want to employ." said Michael Hearns a Coral Gables Police Officer.

An exerpt from the IBM white paper is below:
The goal of intelligence activities is to uncover security threats in time to take action against them. But the patterns that point to these threats are often hidden in massive amounts of data. To meet this challenge, one form of information analysis, predictive analytics, is particularly useful. Predictive analytics solutions apply sophisticated statistical, data exploration and machine-learning techniques to historical information in order to help agencies uncover hidden patterns and trends – even in large, complex datasets. Not only in huge tables of structured data but also in vast amounts of textual data – including e-mail and chat room interactions – that agencies must evaluate. By using predictive analytics, you can anticipate what types of intervention will be needed, and where. So you can plan, rather than react. And make the best use of available resources.

Coral Gables Police sets goal of an ALPR system utilizing assistance from IBM's Smarter Cities Challenge

The Coral Gables Police Department hopes to utilize assistance and technological input from IBM's Smarter Cities Challenge in creating a mobile and stationary Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system. The desired system will allow license plate reader cameras to feed images and information to a command center which in turn will use the data to create predictive analysis, investigative tools, and data sharing opportunities within the tri county area of Miami Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties. The ALPR system is the beginning stage of an information and data sharing venture that the City of Coral Gables intends to build to structure a new and future evolving intelligence stream for the Coral Gables Police Department,  and the University of Miami Public Safety Department.

Coral Gables: A South Florida city with multinational connections

As early as 1925, City founder George Merrick predicted Coral Gables would serve as “a gateway to Latin America.” The City’s multinational business community includes an array of corporations with such interests as oil production, health care, biomedical research, international finance, import and export as oil production, health care, biomedical research, international finance, import and export, transportation, manufacturing, travel and tourism, news information services, telecommunications, and construction/real estate. Currently, Coral Gables is regional headquarters to more than 135 multinationals. Regional offices are heavy purchasers of professional services, particularly in the areas of international law, accounting and global marketing. Although many of the multinational companies have located in Coral Gables to service South and Central America, several of the offices have expanded their reach to include other parts of the globe due to the ease of international travel, reliable telecommunications, and multilingual/multicultural professional staff. In fact, over 100 countries are served from corporate addresses in the City Beautiful. More can be seen HERE

Coral Gables establishes sister city program with international cities

The City of Coral Gables has been building and strengthening partnerships with international communities since 1957 through the Sister Cities International Program. The goal of the program is to create educational and cultural exchanges between Sister Cities with a similar Mediterranean character.
On July 15th at the Annual Award Ceremony held at the historic Warsaw Theater during the 50th Annual Sister Cities International Conference in Washington D.C., Coral Gables received the Best Overall Program Award for the City's continued success in building international relationships.
Coral Gables took home this prestigious award in recognition of the City's efforts, experience and continued success in promoting citizen diplomacy, networking and partnerships between the U.S. and international communities.
The City has a long standing reputation and is now being recognized for years of work building global partnerships, promoting citizen diplomacy, and establishing an international cultural exchange. Recently Coral Gables came to the rescue of their Sister City Cartagena, Colombia when one of its fine arts colleges was unable to pay for much needed musical instruments. The Coral Gables Sister City Program is administered by the Development Department and the City's International Affairs Coordinating Council, a group of volunteer residents for the purpose of enhancing international relations. The cities are:
Aix-en Provence, France
Cartagena, Colombia
Granada, Spain
La Antigua, Guatemala
